Helena Sá has been selected in January 2010 by the Federação Aeronautica Portuguesa to represent Portugal in the 1st European Women Hot Air Balloon Championship 2010. This oficial championship organised by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale will be held from the 15th to 20th June 2010 in Alytus, Lithuania under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitè.

It is finally here …. the 1st Portuguese Hot Air Balloon National Championship from the 7th to 15th November 2009 starting in Lisbon and moving to Alter do Chão and Fronteira in the Alto Alentejo.
Alongside the II Iberian Championship (30 participants) and the XIII BP Hot Air Balloon Meet (50 participants), Helena Sá will be competing against 10 national competitors. Here follows the schedule should you wish to come and have a look:-

Vento condiciona travessia de balão
A 10.ª Travessia de Portugal em Balões de Ar Quente chegou ontem a 
Coimbra, mas o vento impediu que todos os participantes levantassem voo. “Maravilhas de Portugal” é o tema deste ano da prova, que
reúne 21 equipas
Não é a “Volta ao Mundo” de Willy Fog, mas está a sobrevoar as “Maravilhas de Portugal”. A 10.ª edição da Travessia de Portugal em Balões de Ar Quente está no ar e ontem chegou a Coimbra, onde foi possível ver em acção a maioria da comitiva, composta por 21 equipas.
Nas margens do Rio Mondego, sob a “vista” da Torre da Universidade – candidata a uma das Sete Maravilhas de Portugal -, os participantes ainda fizeram um compasso de espera, na expectativa que o vento abrandasse. Apesar das condições não serem as ideais, alguns decidiram arriscar e, a pouco e pouco, foram pintando o céu das margens do rio de várias cores, para alegria de algumas crianças que assistiam em terra ao espectáculo.
Ontem nem todos andaram nas nuvens por Coimbra, mas nem por isso deixou de haver boa disposição. É que, para os participantes da travessia, organizada pelo Clube Português de Balonismo, o encontro é também uma oportunidade de conviver com praticantes de diferentes países e isso é possível fazer com os pés bem assentes na terra.
Helena Sá, a única mulher portuguesa a pilotar balões de ar quente, reconhece que quem se dedica a esta actividade tem de ter um misto «de espírito de aventura e maluquice». Com 40 anos, esta ex-enfermeira-veterinária descobriu a paixão dos balões aos 24 anos, quando ainda vivia na África do Sul, mas só acabaria por tirar a licença em 2001. A viver em Portugal há cinco anos, explica que voar no nosso país «é fantástico».»
Militar de formação, António Malaquias é piloto de balão de ar quente há três anos. Habituado a outras maneiras de ver a Terra do ar, descobriu na prática de balão «uma maneira diferente de voar», com uma característica especial, que nunca tinha experimentado: «o silêncio absoluto».
Voos terminam

A prática desta modalidade está dependente da meteorologia e não foi só em Coimbra que o tempo “fez das suas”. Já em Ponte de Lima, o voo inaugural da 10.ª Travessia de Balão de Ar Quente foi anulado, sendo possível apenas ver os primeiros balões no ar no Porto.
Se tudo correr como previsto, e se o tempo ajudar, hoje de manhã bem cedo as equipas levantam voo em direcção à Batalha, de onde, durante a tarde, parte novo voo de competição com destino a Alcobaça.
Amanhã, os balões partem com destino a Santarém, cidade que acolherá um voo de competição, com largada do Centro Nacional de Exposições, que, quinta-feira, assiste a nova prova rumo a Reguengos de Monsaraz. Para sexta-feira, último dia da travessia, está prevista novo voo de competição com partida na Fortificação de Monsaraz, terminando a aventura em Beja.
Em prova estão participantes portugueses, norte-americanos, alemães, holandeses, ingleses e austríacos.
